Coastal Sensation

This project has one of the best locations on the South Coast. Nestled in the hills of Kiama, this home boasts horizon wide coastal views. This incredible yet challenging site heavily impacted this design and build, with the house’s relationship to the land being an important factor in its creation. From the large-scale structural steel framing to the cantilevered west wing, this house is absolutely a standout project. The windows and doors are no exception. Large commercial grade sliding stacking doors surround this home, opening the indoors up to the incredible surrounds. Sweeping panels of fixed glass combined with louvred windows and Aneeta sash less windows allow the homeowners to capture the stunning coastal breeze and use it to cool the home. Clear anodised window frames and stainless-steel hardware not only blend with the aesthetics of the home, but they also can withstand the harsh coastal conditions. With large amounts of glass featuring in this architecturally designed home, the energy efficiency of these products is paramount. Large amounts of Low E glass was used due to its energy efficiency capabilities, so as to not compromise the energy requirements of the build. Icon hardware in 316 grade stainless steel was the perfect match for the commercial doors and will be more able to withstand the coastal conditions.

This incredible project spent a year in design, took one year for final approvals and then took 2 years to complete the build. It was a labour of love and the homeowners were so glad to finally see their dream home become a reality. Having taken so long in the design and approval phase of this build, the accuracy of this project was of the utmost importance. The accuracy was one of the most important aspects of the build, with such a steep site, harsh coastal location and detailed design there was no room for error or inaccuracies. It’s the fine details of this build which have really made it the standout. There were many complexities in this build that required one hundred percent accuracy, for example the cantilevered structural element in the west side of the building was one that needed to be engineered to complete accuracy. This incredible feature of the house is a real stand out as you drive in and has been finished to perfection. The concrete pier structure that reinforced the concrete floor slabs was another element of this build of which accuracy was incredibly important. Clear anodised window and door frames in a commercial section were used for their strength, aesthetic, and ability to withstand the harsh wind and water loads. Paired with stainless steel hardware the final result of these products was one of high quality finishes. The client is very satisfied with the end result, particularly noting the buildings relationship to the site and the effectiveness of working with both us, architect and builder to successfully achieve their desired outcome.

Our Approach

The clients required a modern, quality build that optimised the steep, rugged coastal site without compromising on energy efficiency. Connection to the site was very important to them and they wanted to make sure that this was considered with all aspects of the build. The client desired several different windows and door styles and types in a variety of custom sizes. They wanted to achieve a modern look in the house that was still able to satisfy the high wind loads of the coastal area. They worked closely with the builder and us to reach these desired outcomes. They said they worked with Hanlon’s as we had a good range of suitable products available and were able to work closely with the builder to make sure the installation and performance of the products was not compromised.
